Questions on how this process works?
You’re in the right place!
Q: Why do I need you folks? Can’t I get this information on some Internet forum for free?
A: Free certainly sounds appealing, but there are subtleties to consider. With Internet forums, you can join, ask your questions, and wait for a reply. Often, you’re not exactly sure of who it is that ends up replying to your post, or what their background is. In addition, as they’re responding out of the goodness of their heart, there is usually no guarantee on turn around time. Forums have their place, but there is usually some amount of Internet snark and trolling (i.e. insulting you or making you feel bad for asking questions). And there’s no guarantee that your questions will be answered to your satisfaction.
Q: Can’t I just buy a book about this instead?
A: Sure! But it’s not an either-or situation. We imagine if you’re planning on taking an adventure of large magnitude that you’ll want to have all the information that you can. We recommend reading all the books, joining all the forums, AND taking time to meet with one of our Copilots. Our advice might just save your life!
Q: Can you give me an example of some of the advice that I might get?
A: Depending on the type of trip you’re taking, our advice will vary. For a motorcycle tour trip, for instance, we can talk to you about the best kind of bike for a trip, how to reach out to suppliers to get discounts on gear (or free gear), advice on photography equipment, advice on setting up your own social media presence and the feasibility of running a travel blog while you’re traveling (harder than you think), considerations on writing a will in the event of a worst case situation, a review of your gear list and itinerary, where to get luggage, a gut check on your budget, and essential safety devices, classes you’ll want to enroll in before you leave, strategies to learn a language techniques to save your life, what to do in the event of a crash, medical considerations you’d want to make before you leave, a comparison of different insurance plans, … just to name a few. Plus any other questions you might have.
If you have a different type of trip in mind, we can tailor the information based on what you need. We are also constantly adding more Copilots on a consulting basis so if you don’t see someone with the experience you need, please do contact us.
Q: Who are you? Who started this?
A: Hi, I’m David Parkinson, the founder of Arooni Labs, Adventure Copilot, MagicPressPass, and PhoneMyPhone. I rode my motorcycle from Seattle, Washington to Ushuaia, Argentina (then back up through Paraguay and Brazil). The trip was 42,000 miles through 18 countries over 4 years. It was the best thing I’ve done in my life!
I want to help more people create and take on adventures that will forever change their lives. I also wanted to help adventurers who had completed a trip of their own to earn an income from their experience. I hope to create the world’s first adventure travel consultancy. Not just motorcycle travel, but supporting all kinds of independent adventure. There is a certain magic to planning and making your own adventure reality. We hope to help you find this magic and help you in whatever way we can.
Q: But why did you create this service?
A: I was frustrated when I was planning my motorcycle trip to South America that there was not a similar service. I spent hundreds of hours ,and about three months full-time planning my trip. I read all the books, joined all the Internet forums, asked all the questions, taught myself motorcycle maintenance, learned how to ride off-road and countless other skills. My hope is to help you avoid spending as much time as I did in planning the adventure of my life.
We also seek to help inspire you and make your dream self-led adventure come true with practical advice. Finally, I found that there were so many people who had taken epic adventures and could help people wanting to do similar things, but not everyone has the desire to write a book or start a website. It’s my belief that these experts could share their experience, and earn some extra income in doing so.
